This video guide is going to show you how to check available modules positions in Joomla 3.x template and how to use this information.

Each Joomla template has positions where you can publish different modules. It depends on the template you’re using how many of them are available. There are 2 ways to check available modules’ positions.

With an access to Joomla administration panel.

There is one very useful trick that can be used to find out what are the names of any Joomla template positions and where are they situated on the frontend.

First, go to Extensions -> Template Manager in site admin panel.

On this page, click on Options button in the top menu.

Here, switch the Preview Module Positions to Enabled and click Save button in the top left part of the page.

Look at your theme list again. You will notice a small eye (preview) appearing next to each theme title. Click this small eye preview next to your theme name.

Now you will see positions of the available modules.

Without Joomla administration access

Modules’ position can be checked without Joomla administration access if your Joomla template is delivered with PSD file called ‘module_position’. It can be found in sources\psd folder of the template package.

How can you apply this information on practice?

Imagine the situation when you need to add a new custom position or when you wish to assign a module to a certain position of a certain page. First and foremost, you need to check the existing modules position of the active theme. But, please, keep in mind that modules positions in Joomla 3.x are defined per template.

This guide will show you step by step on how to add a new module position.

The second manual will guide you on how to manage modules positions and assign them to certain pages.

Let’s change the position of Join in menu in the footer, for example.

  1. We navigate to Extensions -> Modules;

  2. Then we should locate Join in module and open it to configure;

  3. Finally, let’s change bottom position to showcase in the right hand column;

  4. After saving changes, the module appears right below the slider in the position we selected.
